Firefox find bar auto-hiding

Tags: , , , Filed under: Written in Englishhugo @ 20:23

After trying to figure out the problem of my find bar not disappearing by itself for the past 2 days, I thought that I’d document the result of my research.

There are several ways to search for text in Firefox:

  • Type-ahead find: just start typing and it looks for the text incrementally
  • By hitting the / or ' key: the find bar appears and you can start typing your search
  • By hitting Ctrl+F: again, the find bar appears and you can start typing your search

If you stop searching for something, the find bar will disappear after a preset amount of time (see the accessibility.typeaheadfind.timeout setting), but only for the first two ways of searching. If you search with Ctrl+F, the find bar will not disappear.

This is a little weird that it behaves differently depending on which way you call the find bar. The Hide Find Bar extension will however make the auto-hiding work for all 3 methods.

There is another much more annoying aggrivating bug.

Start a find, now use the mouse click on “Find next”, do that regularly once a second or even faster. Count how many times you click before it disappears while you’re in the midst of finding things.

For me it’s always around 13 or 16.

Doesn’t matter if you’re on a huge page that has 100 matches, or on this blog page that only has 2 matches. Poof while you’re clicking it disappears.

    wtf is up with that?

It’s not 100 percent consistent. If I have only two matches on the page right beside one another, it may allow me to search next forever. It may be something to do with what you click on or do between doing the first search and doing search next. But it’s very repeatable once you’ve found it. It’s been annoying the heck out of me for a long long time.

I’ve found that using the scrollbar always makes it disappear. I find this incredibly annoying, and consider it a bug (or at least something demaning an option). However, by using the bug listed on this page (Ctrl-F) as a “feature”, you can start searches that don’t disappear just because you touched the scrollbar.

Dude… how do I get that damn find bar to go away and stop ruining my life? Everytime I type into my google search the find bar pops up and it will not go away. I have to cut and paste from notepad just to search something…

    help.

I agree - I can’t use apostrophes anymore in any email without the stupid find bar appearing. What is wrong with ctrl + f? I mean, is that so much effort that it has to just be one key? All of my friends are wondering why I’m spelling everything out now. There are no apostrophes anymore! All of my emails are formal!

    Please help!
