Flickr interface revamped

It’s going to take some time to get used to, but the new interface of Flickr seems really cool.

Editing a batch of photos is now so much easier! Kudos to the Flickr team.

Libération reports that Europe is currently under a huge could of pollen. The satellite photo is impressive! Best of luck if you’re allergic.

KeePass logo

In an attempt to free myself from a depending on a single platform as I’m envisioning changes in my equipment in the near future, I have moved my password database from YAPS on the Palm to KeePass, which is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Pocket PC. What is missing in this list in unfortunately PalmOS.

I therefore put together a KeePass to Keyring converter, and now my database is back on my Palm. Enjoy.

Yahoo! Search Open Shortcuts

Tags: , , , Filed under: Written in Englishhugo @ 14:22

I discovered today that Yahoo! Search has a concept of open shortcuts similar to Gerald’s Do The Right Thing script or Mozilla’s Smart Keywords.

Pretty cool!

To see which ones are available to you, try !list.

Creating an RSS feed online in just a few clicks

Tags: , , Filed under: Written in Englishhugo @ 12:25

Ponyfish allows one to create an RSS feed for any page in just a few clicks.

You paste the URL of the page you’d like to create a feed for. The page is shown to you. You then click on links that you want to have in the RSS feed, and Ponyfish creates a URL pattern that matches those, which is then used to build an RSS feed.

I tried it on Robert Gil’s photo site. In a few clicks, and after having tweaked the pattern slightly (e.g. the pattern for dates was 2006-05-0* that I generalized), I obtained an RSS feed for it. The problem I found is that, as the link is an an img tag, the title of each entry is the URL of the thumbnail for each gallery (e.g. http://lockuhomm.free.fr/MICKEY%203D/PARIS%20-%20Zenith%20-%202006-05-03/vignette/2006-05-03-0184.gif) instead of the name of the gallery itself (MICKEY 3D). I suspect that for most sites, titles of links will be more meaningful than this.

Firefox find bar auto-hiding

Tags: , , , Filed under: Written in Englishhugo @ 20:23

After trying to figure out the problem of my find bar not disappearing by itself for the past 2 days, I thought that I’d document the result of my research.

There are several ways to search for text in Firefox:

  • Type-ahead find: just start typing and it looks for the text incrementally
  • By hitting the / or ' key: the find bar appears and you can start typing your search
  • By hitting Ctrl+F: again, the find bar appears and you can start typing your search

If you stop searching for something, the find bar will disappear after a preset amount of time (see the accessibility.typeaheadfind.timeout setting), but only for the first two ways of searching. If you search with Ctrl+F, the find bar will not disappear.

This is a little weird that it behaves differently depending on which way you call the find bar. The Hide Find Bar extension will however make the auto-hiding work for all 3 methods.
