PalmOS-based PDA resources

This page is unfortunately out-of-date. Since I doubled the I had RAM by buying a Sony Clié PEG-S360 in February 2002, I lost the time to keep this page up-to-date: I installed too many programs on it. I however have a project to generate a similar page based on the PRCs that are on my PDA.

I bought a Palm III, my first PalmOS-based PDA in December 1998. I liked it and ended up choosing all my PIM software so that I could synchronize it on my PDA. However, it got old and the memory was limited.

In May 2001, I wanted to buy the new Sony Clié N710C, but I saw thanks to techbargains.com that I could get the Sony Clié PEG-S300 for pretty cheap with the $50 rebate from Sony and the online coupons from Staples. I therefore went ahead and bought the Sony Clié PEG-S300 on Staples.com.

Now that I have much more memory, I am able to put a lot more software, so I started having a look at the cool stuff I could get. In order to check the updates easily and also because I was looking for such a list of col software that people installed on their PDA, I have decided to put my list online.

I want to make this page my resource page for cool PDA stuff, so that I can get new info easily. Note that this page is oriented towards the Sony Clié since this is what I currently use.

Where to get software from?

• FreewarePalm: definitely the best place to get freeware stuff.
• PalmGear.com: probably the most complete site, but mostly shareware and commercial.
• Tucows - PDA: not bad, but not great.
• nXt's Clie Club files collection: a good collection of Clie specific programs.
• Clie Upgrade Center: Site for CLIE upgrade files.

Interesting software

The list below is a list of programs that I either tried at some point, found interesting, or use. At the time I am writing this, I haven't tried them all. I will probably really use half of it or something, but this list is worth interest. I will take some time making a better job classifying them.

• CruiseControl: might only work with Palm Pilots.
• DateBk3: cool replacement for Datebook, but shareware
• X-Master: successor of HackMaster.
• DiddleBug: scribbling software.
• AvantGo: Plucker is probably better.
• MiddleCaps: definitely the coolest hack I have seen.
• iSilo: Plucker is probably better.
• Noah English dictionnary: great stuff, similar to WordNet.
• BigClock: handy when you don't want to travel with an alarm clock.
• LauncherIII: excellent application launcher.
• MetrO: great subway/train guide.
• ClockHack: old hack, seems pretty cool though.
• MenuHack: another great small hack.
• PalmName: change ids.
• Converter: classical unit converter software.
• Yet Another Unit Converter: apparently more complete unit converter.
• Currency: currency converter, always handy.
• PCash: apparently pretty cool money management software.
• Kalk: simple and cool RPN calculator.
• Rally1000: let's face it, the best game on PalmOS.
• Diddle: paint application.
• DrawIt: paint application.
• Gray Paint: paint application.
• FireViewer: seems cool.

• Vindigo: maps and other useful information; doesn't work under Linux unfortunately.
• ZBoxZ: to view GIFs and PNGs on the Palm
• PalmImage: tool for converting pictures.
• Crs-MeDoc: DOC reader which can read from the Memory Stick. Pretty fast.
• PCompress: program which compresses databases
• ClockPopHack: handy program which displays the time
• Date@Glance: program to see how busy you are at a glance
• McPhling: fast application launcher
• HappyDays: birthday manager
• HandyShopper: shopping list program
• MegaWiki: application linking; see also the MegaWiki group.
• EasyLaunch: good DA launcher

• USB Clié support / Guide to talk to a PEG-S320 under Linux / My report about the PEG-S300 not talking to Linux; however, Linux 2.4.18 should fix the problem
