How I discovered Tracy Bonham

Read my other concert reviews.

Tower Records, Boston, MA, USA: 20 April 2000

I saw in the Boston Phoenix that Tracy Bonham was playing live at Tower Records on Newbury Street, in Boston, MA on 20 April 2000.

I knew her name somehow, and had the feeling that it was going to be good. So I decided to go. Well, I wasn't been disapointed.

She performed 5 songs: (if I remember correctly)

They had an impressive gear. 2 guitars and 1 violin for Tracy, 3 guitars for the guitarist.

Anyway, it was a pretty good set. Afterwards, Tracy signed autographs and I even got a picture with her, just in case I become a big fan. Since I met Steve Vai and I don't even have a picture to remember that, I don't hesitate to take pictures of everything! :-)

There are also pictures of the concert.

Anyway, I'm going to see her on 22 April 2000 at Axis, in Boston, MA. I don't think I'll be able to take pictures though.

I was wondering if I had to buy my tickets in advance or not. I called Next Ticketing, and of course there was a convenience fee of $2.50 per ticket, which is pretty expensive for a $10.00 ticket. Rant: TicketMaster and Next Ticketing are really pissing me off; they charge you a lot for buying tickets with them but they have a monopoly so you can't avoid that unless you want to take the risk to buy the tickets at the door! I wish there was an alternative... Anyway, I thought that there wouldn't be a lot of people going, so I decided to buy them at Axis when the doors open. However, I went to Newbury Comics on Newbury Street (now my favorite place for CD's) during the afternoon and they were giving a pair of tickets when you were buying Tracy's new CD. So we got two tickets and a CD for $8.99+tax. I love it when a plan comes together! See the ticket.

The concert started on time. It wasn't long at all: only 1 hour 5 minutes! It was a pretty good concert though.

The guitar was much too loud. I found that we couldn't hear her sing very well. It was also hard to hear her violin. I believe that this is a choice she made though, because the same happens on her new album. I think that it's a shame.

The guitarist came on stage with his leather jacket. I don't mean that he was wearing it, he just brought it there. I don't know, maybe he thought he would be cold or something. Anyway, that was pretty funny.

I discovered during this concert that Tracy Bonham is actually pretty well-known (even in France) because of her hit song Mother Mother. I didn't know who was singing that.

After less than one hour, they left the stage and quickly came back for an encore. They played Back in Black by AC/DC. After that, Tracy asked for a guitar. The guitarist, who hadn't seen that, was already leaving the stage (with his jacket in his hands) so he quickly had to replug his guitar and he missed the beginning of the last song (which was an old song that I didn't know).

They then quickly walked out of the stage. They left pretty quickly, and people wanted another song but the lights were promptly turned on.

So it was a pretty good concert, but it was short and the sound could have been better.

Cécile, a friend, took a picture of the concert.
